Frequently Asked Questions
This tool works wholesale → retail: enter your wholesale/manufacturing cost and a target margin, and it computes the retail price to charge. Wholesale Price Calculator works the opposite direction, discounting an existing retail price down for resellers.
Because margin is defined as profit ÷ selling price, not profit ÷ cost. Dividing cost by (1 − margin%) is the correct way to solve for the selling price that gives you exactly that margin on the final price — multiplying by (1 + margin%) would actually compute a markup, not a margin, and would undershoot your target.
It varies enormously by industry (grocery retail often runs under 20%, apparel and specialty goods often 50%+) — this tool doesn't recommend one, it just computes the price for whatever margin % you enter.
No — the output is your pre-tax retail price at your target margin. Add applicable sales tax/GST on top before displaying the final customer-facing price.
