Why Your CTC and Take-Home Salary Are Different

New employees in India are often surprised to find that their actual bank credit is significantly lower than the CTC (Cost to Company) stated in their offer letter. A CTC of Rs. 12 lakh per annum does not mean Rs. 1 lakh per month in hand. The difference comes from employer contributions (EPF, gratuity), tax deductions (TDS), and statutory deductions (professional tax, ESIC if applicable).

Use our CTC to Take-Home Calculator to get an accurate monthly salary estimate before accepting a job offer.

Anatomy of a Typical Salary Structure in India

A standard Indian salary structure for a private-sector employee looks like this:

Gross Salary Components (what you receive):

  • Basic Salary — typically 40–50% of CTC. This is the foundation of your salary and determines EPF, gratuity, and often HRA.
  • HRA (House Rent Allowance) — usually 40–50% of basic. Partially exempt from tax if you live in rented accommodation.
  • Special Allowance — the residual after all other components. Fully taxable.
  • DA (Dearness Allowance) — primarily for government employees; private sector DA is usually zero or nominal.
  • LTA (Leave Travel Allowance) — for travel within India; exempt from tax twice in a 2-year block with actual bills.
  • Medical/Conveyance Allowance — Rs. 15,000/year medical (old regime) and Rs. 1,600/month conveyance partially exempt.

Employer Contributions (part of CTC but you do not receive directly):

  • Employer EPF (12% of basic) — goes into your PF account. Part of CTC but not gross salary.
  • Gratuity (4.81% of basic) — a statutory payment for employees who complete 5+ years. Accrues as part of CTC.
  • Employer ESIC (3.25%) — only if gross salary ≤ Rs. 21,000/month. Otherwise not applicable.

Deductions From Your Gross Salary

Your net take-home = Gross Salary − All Deductions:

  • Employee EPF (12% of basic) — deducted every month, goes into your PF account
  • Professional Tax — Rs. 200/month in most states (Maharashtra, Karnataka, etc.); not applicable in all states
  • TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) — income tax deducted based on your declared investments under Form 12BB
  • Employee ESIC (0.75%) — only if gross ≤ Rs. 21,000/month

How to Calculate EPF

EPF (Employees Provident Fund) is calculated on basic salary + DA:

  • Employee contribution: 12% of basic
  • Employer contribution: 12% of basic (but split — 8.33% goes to EPS for pension, 3.67% to EPF)

The EPF account earns 8.15% interest per annum (FY 2023-24) — one of the best guaranteed returns available in India. Use our EPF calculator to project your PF balance at retirement.

HRA Exemption: How Much Is Tax-Free?

HRA exemption under the old tax regime is the minimum of:

  1. Actual HRA received from employer
  2. Rent paid − 10% of basic salary
  3. 50% of basic (metro cities: Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata) or 40% (other cities)

If you live in your own house or do not pay rent, the entire HRA is taxable. Use our HRA Exemption Calculator to find your exact tax-free amount.

Gratuity: When Do You Get It and How Much?

Gratuity is a lump-sum payment made by the employer when you resign, retire, or are terminated after completing 5 years of continuous service:

Gratuity = (Last Drawn Basic × 15 × Years of Service) / 26

Example: Basic of Rs. 50,000/month after 10 years → Gratuity = Rs. 50,000 × 15 × 10 / 26 = Rs. 2,88,462. Gratuity up to Rs. 20 lakh is fully exempt from income tax for private sector employees. Use our gratuity calculator to estimate your entitlement.

Salary Comparison: Evaluating Two Job Offers

When comparing job offers, do not compare CTC to CTC. Compare:

  • Fixed pay (CTC minus variable component)
  • Net take-home after TDS
  • Variable pay achievability (is the target realistic?)
  • Benefits (health insurance coverage, LTA policy, NPS contribution)
  • ESOP value (if equity is part of the offer)

Our salary comparison calculator lets you input two offers side by side and compare fixed pay, variable pay, and estimated take-home.
