Frequently Asked Questions

Gross = Net ÷ (1 − 0.12 − your tax rate). It assumes PF is 12% of gross (not of Basic, unlike this site's CTC-based tools) and subtracts your entered tax rate as a flat percentage of gross.

The CTC-based tools (Salary Breakup, CTC Calculator) apply 12% PF to Basic, which is 40% of CTC. This tool applies 12% PF directly to the gross figure it's solving for — a simpler, different assumption, so the two won't reconcile exactly for the same salary.

Enter your estimated effective income-tax rate as a percentage. This tool doesn't calculate slab-based tax for you — use the TDS on Salary Calculator first if you need a slab-based estimate, then enter that rate here.

It's a reasonable back-of-envelope target, not a guaranteed CTC — actual employer PF rules, allowances, and tax withholding will shift the real gross needed to hit your take-home target.
